About our Public Safety Department

Fate DPS is a growing agency that consists of highly trained police and firefighters that work to serve the city 24/7.  Our patrol officers work a 12 hour shift and are responsible for proactively enforcing state and  municipal, laws and ordinances designed to protect life and property.  

Police Officers handle a variety of calls during their duty shifts. The Law Enforcement Division is comprised of Operations, Traffic, CID and SRO programs.  Fate DPS is no longer requiring applicants to be triple certified (Police, Fire, EMT).  Additional certifications (Fire, EMT) are optional if desired by applicant.

Out of State Applicants must obtain a TCOLE License, see TCOLE website for reciprocity requirement.

Hiring Process

1. Initial Application
2. Physical Agility Test

  • 75' Dummy Drag completed in under 18.2 seconds (Dummy is 165lbs.) 
  • 2 Minute Rest
  • 2,000M Row, Concept 2 Rower Resistance Level 5, Completed in 8:56
  • Computer Based General Knowledge Test

3. Completion of Background Packet and Associated Documents
4. Preliminary Interview
5. Background Investigation
6. Oral Board
7. Chief's Interview
8. Pass Drug, Psych, and Medical Physical 
9. Job Offer 

In-House 2-Week Mini Academy Upon Hiring

Mini Academy consists of Defensive Tactics Training, Firearms Training, Driving Training, Department Policies, and other job related training.

Field Training (FTO): 

Fate DPS' Field Training Program is a 4-phase program dedicated to educating new Police Officers in the practices, policies, and high expectations of the City of Fate and Department of Public Safety.  

Phase 1 - 3: Each phase consist of a 4-week field training program with a rotating FTO per phase. 

Phase 4: 2-Week ghost phase where the Officer is evaluated on the knowledge they have gained during their FTO. 

(Abbreviated FTO program is available for Officers with experience at the DPS Chief's discretion)

12 - hour Police shifts
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday - 6A - 6P / 6P - 6A
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday - 6A - 6P / 6P - 6A
Every other Saturday Off

*Lateral Policy:

 An experienced officer may be eligible to begin employment in a higher step pay bracket than regular entry level candidates. Lateral entry applicants will be required pass all of the hiring process entry testing in the same manner as other employment applicants. This program is for pay step purposes only. Lateral entry applicants are not eligible for elevated seniority in this agency.

The following criteria is required to be eligible for this program:

  • The applicant must have less than 1 year break in service
  • Prior full time employment
  • The applicant must have worked in a jurisdiction of 20,000 population minimum and a maximum of 200,000 population.
  • Out of State experience may receive a pay step for every 5 years of prior service
  •  In State experience may receive a pay step for every 4 years of prior service
  • In County experience may receive a pay step for every 3 years of prior service

Any variations of the criteria will need the approval of the Director of Public Safety.
